Northern Liberties

New Northern Liberties LP Available for Streaming & Purchase

A menacing psych/hard-rock heaviness engulfs on Parallel Hell, the latest LP from Northern Liberties. Spirited vocals and a relentless rhythm section create a consuming, contagious sound. It's been over a decade and a half that Renaissance man Justin Duerr has been releasing material via this creative outlet. Duerr continues to demonstrate how he's an unflinching, uncompromising musical force of nature in the Philly underground.

Philly Beer Week Scavenger Run & Free Music Fest at Dock Street Brewery June 12

Some of you have probably been gettin’ your drink on for Philly Beer Week. And as the curtain begins to pull shut for the ten-day celebration, I look forward to ending things at Dock Street Brewery’s PBW Scavenger Run & Free Music Fest, as I always do every year. Now, I’m not going to lie. I neither have the physical capability or desire to do any running around today, but you can be sure as hell to count me in for some great brews, scrumptious pizzas, and sweet local acts. As usual, it’s an eclectic lineup that feeds off the diversity of the West Philly neighborhood. Ready to throwdown this year for your listening pleasure will be neo-psych sextet Needle Points (who are currently recording its next album with Dr. Dog’s Scott McMicken), experimental punks Northern Liberties, the funky sounds of Black Landlord, and L’ananas (featuring members of Grandchildren). It’s really too nice of a day to just stay at home and nurse hangover. A bit of the hair of the dog, a few slices, and an afternoon of good tunes will make the pain all go away. Dock Street Brewery, 50th St. & Baltimore Ave., 2:30pm - 8pm, Free, All Ages - Alexis V.

Northern Liberties Record Release Show at JB's May 29

There are few bands that can produce the mystic, menacing power that three-piece Northern Liberties has created throughout its discography. Self-titled as “ghost-punk” (sort of a harrowing noise-punk), the group is best experienced live. To watch brothers Justin and Marc Duerr and longtime best friend Kevin Reilly perform is to know them. However, for the past five odd years or so, Northern Liberties, born out of West Philly house shows, has been taken a break from releasing any material. Tonight at Johnny Brenda’s, the band is ending its hiatus, and celebrating the release of the trio's new album, Errant Ray. Psych/cyber-rock outfit S.T.A.R.W.O.O.D. will also be an entertaining force. Expect killer vocals, intergalactic warrior outfits, and lots of lasers. Hardcore four-piece Westboro Baptist Choir will be kicking off the celebration. Johnny Brenda's, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 9pm, $10, 21+ - Emily DiCicco
