New Track: "Hereditary Trauma Dream Sprinting (Oxford Circle)" - Nina Keith

“Hereditary Trauma Dream Sprinting (Oxford Circle)” is the lead single from MARANASATI 19111, the forthcoming debut full-length from Nina Keith. The LP is slated to arrive on August 30 via Grind Select. From its bird-chirping opening through the elegant expansive piano and flourishes of flute, etc., Keith creates a vivid, sonic landscape that also includes vocal assistance from Becki Freiberg. A graceful, weightless atmosphere thrives within an inherently complex, classical setting. It feels as though all your senses have been finely tuned to fully appreciate the nuanced layers. Bent Knee's Courtney Swain intrigues with solo record "Between Blood and Ocean"

Courtney Swain, the ever-active lead singer of the Boston-based group Bent Knee, released a solo record back in May and it takes a bite out of the New England music scene. Between Blood and Ocean is existential therapy via ethereal songs like “Snowflakes” and hard-charging alternative tracks like “I’d Kill.” Bleeding out the avant-indie influences that have helped shape Bent Knee, Swain deploys gritty guitar riffs, syncopated drum patterns, crushing electronic percussion, and tender piano melodies for a sound unlike anything else in music today. The songs were written during Swain’s stay in Martha’s Vineyard for a residency awarded by the Turkey Land Cove Foundation. The singer/songwriter thanks Asher Kurtz, Jed Lingat, Kyle Harris, and Tim Doherty for helping bring the album to life. Swain, the Providence local, has further stoked the fires of curiosity, intrigued, and innovated with this new entry. We are streaming the worldly-sounding “Sweet Snow” below. - Rene Cobar

Fresh Buzz: Ghost Funk Orchestra Releases Single, "Skin I'm In"

The output of NYC-based Ghost Funk Orchestra is becoming increasingly more sophisticated, and the group is also playing more frequently this year, which is always a good sign. Their most recent LP release, A Song For Paul (a band member's grandfather) is a complex matter propelled by a 10-piece band comprising horns, woodwinds, strings, keys, a tambourine, on top of the expected drums/bass/guitar. Their latest single "Skin I'm In" is an excersize of restrained psychedelia at times reminiscent of unforgettable British band Broadcast.

Featuring effected vocals that span layers of groovy orchestral textures, the single seemlessly blends elements from ganres as disparate as funk, noise rock and Eastern music. This is one of the coolest track we stumbled upon this year; you can check out Ghost Funk Orchestra at Elsewhere on July 30th at 8 PM. - Susan Moon

Chinchano "El Regreso"

Lima, Peru native and Percussionist Juan Pastor has spent the last 13 years living in and deeply experiencing our local music scene. His latest album, El Regreso (due out July 28th), draws from both cultures to fully encompass Pastor’s life to this point. The first single, "Callejón", draws on his youth in Lima and features Miguel Zenon on Alto Sax.

Through out the album Pastor is joined by Stu Mindeman (piano and organ), Patrick Mulcahy (bass), Rich Moore (alto saxophone), and Tito Carrillo (trumpet).

You can catch Chinchano on July 15th at Andy’s Jazz Club.
